The Controls Engineer will primarily install, troubleshoot, and repair complex beverage & associated equipment as well as at times, aid in design improvements, development, and implementation of control systems for the same equipment. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure systems meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, has a solid foundation in control systems, and is eager to grow their technical expertise.<br><br><strong>How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:</strong><br><ul><li>Design, program, and test programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other control systems for automated equipment. </li><li>Develop control system schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical). </li><li>Troubleshoot and debug control systems during commissioning, startup, and ongoing operations. </li><li>Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to integrate control systems into larger automation projects. </li><li>Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., UL, NEC, ISA) and safety regulations. </li><li>Support field installations, including system testing, calibration, and operator training. </li><li>Document technical specifications, user manuals, and maintenance procedures. </li><li>Assist in evaluating and selecting control system components and vendors. </li><li>Participate in project planning, including scope definition, timeline estimation, and resource allocation. </li><li>Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends to improve system performance.</li><li>Release of PLC programs (AllenBradley, Siemens, Omron, Bosch), electrical schematics based on customer specifications in accordance with engineering standards.</li><li>Know how to wire a machine according to the drawings as well as debug wiring.</li><li>Work with senior engineers and manufacturing personnel.</li><li>Reply to requested configurations and provide estimates to project management for proposals to customers. </li><li>Identify and ensure best practices are shared and implemented. </li><li>Support machine building process from assembly, debugging and acceptance testing, through potential on-site customer installations and start-up support internationally.</li></ul><br><strong>What you need to succeed:</strong><br><ul><li>Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field. </li><li>2-5 years of experience in controls engineering or a related role (more experience will be considered in lieu of a degree). </li><li>Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi) and HMI development (e.g., FactoryTalk, Wonderware). </li><li>Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus). </li><li>Experience with CAD software for electrical design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN). </li><li>Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot electrical and control systems. </li><li>Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams. </li><li>Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.</li><li>Ability to read a schematic</li><li>Willingness to travel for field support (at times up to 70% travel, depending on business needs).</li></ul><br><br><strong>Preferred Qualifications </strong><br><ul><li>Experience with robotics, motion control systems, or vision systems. </li><li>Knowledge of programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Python. </li><li>Familiarity with cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems. </li><li>Exposure to Lean or Six Sigma methodologies</li></ul> <br><br>Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment. <br><br>Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by state or federal law.
