Cyber Security Engineer (Remote Opportunity)
VetsEZ is seeking a <strong>Cyber Security Engineer</strong> to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) VetPro credentialing system under the HMDM program. This role will lead cybersecurity operations, compliance, and engineering activities to safeguard mission-critical systems hosted in the VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC). The ideal candidate has strong experience with federal security frameworks, vulnerability management, and secure system design.<br><br>The candidate must reside within the continental US.<br><br><strong>Responsibilities<br><br></strong><ul><li>Implement and maintain security controls in line with VA Handbook 6500 and NIST 800-53.</li><li>Develop and maintain ATO documentation including System Security Plans (SSP), Security Assessment Reports (SAR), and Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&M).</li><li>Conduct vulnerability scans, analyze findings, and coordinate remediation.</li><li>Collaborate with DevSecOps teams to integrate security into CI/CD pipelines.</li><li>Monitor system logs and alerts to detect and respond to incidents.</li><li>Ensure compliance with Section 508, privacy, and data protection requirements.</li><li>Participate in security reviews, design sessions, and change control boards.</li><li>Support VA cybersecurity stakeholders with reporting and continuous monitoring.</li><li>Maintain documentation for configurations, incident response, and contingency plans. </li><li>Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Requirements<br><br></strong><ul><li>Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or related field.</li><li> 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity engineering or information assurance.</li><li>Strong knowledge of NIST 800-53, FISMA, and VA Handbook 6500.</li><li>Experience supporting ATO processes and security documentation for federal systems.</li><li>Hands-on experience with vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., Nessus, Qualys), SIEMs, and endpoint protection.</li><li>Familiarity with cloud security principles in Azure or VAEC. </li><li>Proficiency in evaluating system vulnerabilities and implementing security controls.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Additional Qualifications<br><br></strong><ul><li>Certifications: CISSP, CISM, Security+, or CEH.</li><li>Experience with DevSecOps tools (GitLab, Jenkins, Terraform).</li><li>Knowledge of credentialing systems and safeguarding PII/PHI. </li><li>Prior experience supporting VA systems or healthcare IT.</li><li>Ability to obtain government clearance.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Benefits<br><br></strong><ul><li>Medical/Dental/Vision</li><li>401k with Employer Match</li><li>PTO + Federal Holidays</li><li>Corporate Laptop</li><li>Training opportunities<br><br></li></ul>Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or protected veteran status.<br><br>Sorry, we are unable to offer sponsorship at this time.
